The show “Rondo Kraków” is a preview of the exhibition of a sculpture project dedicated to classical music planned for Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Cracow as part of the celebrations of the 80th artistic season in April and May 2025.
The event was carried out with the financial support of the Małopolska Voivodeship.
Sculptures by Mirosław Baca presented during the event are two works that are part of a series of sculptures inspired by classical music. The works were created in 2021-2023 in Krakow in a studio on of Fort Kosocice. The Manggha Museum presents large-format sculptures made of wood and Bolechowice limestone: “Rondo Kraków” from 2022, “Trumpet Concerto” from 2023. The event organized by the Fort Kosocice Foundation will be the first public presentation of the project in Kraków, an announcement and promotion of the “Toccata Filharmonicca” exhibition at the Kraków Philharmonic in 2025. The sculptures are part of a project inspired by classical music initiated by the artist during his artist residencies in 2018 in Canada (Kingsbrae Gardens, Saint Andrew by the Sea, New Brunswick), in 2019 in the United States (I-Park Foundation, East Haddam, Connecticut), in 2021 in Denmark (Hollufgård Skulpturpark, Odense), continued in Kraków (2020–2024) and currently in Switzerland. Individual works have been presented at their location and in other galleries (Kingsbrae Gardens, New Brunswick, Canada; I-Park Foundation, Connecticut, USA; Lamar Dott Art Center, Georgia, USA; Hollufgård Skulpturpark, Odense, Denmark; Butohsfera, Warsaw). The sculpture “Spil / Play” has found its final permanent exhibition location at the entrance of the Podgórze Culture Center building in Fort Borek in Kraków. The works carried out in Switzerland in 2024 are presented at the Centro Internazionale di Scultura in Peccia. An important point of the event is the Butoh performance by Anita Zdrojewska accompanied by music by Ruff Libner. The show is inspired by the presented sculptures with a special focus on the material. The sculptures also become a choreographic link. Butoh is a countercultural dance form that emerged in Japan in the late 1950s. Its creators were Tatsumi Hijikata (1928-1986) and Kazuo Ohno (1906-2010). Initially working in the modern dance movement, in search of a way to liberate the body from choreographically limited movements and recognized canons of beauty, they created a completely new, their own type of dance and performance practice. In dance, the artist will focus particularly on material that has been subjected to sculptural processing. Trees and stones, which constitute the natural environment, accompany man for centuries, becoming silent witnesses to events; the stories contained in their layers are both an inspiration and a choreographic link connecting the past with the present. They will come to life in the dancer’s movement and the accompanying, non-random music: Ruff Libner is a virtuoso of one of the oldest wind instruments in the world – the didjeridoo. ANITA ZDROJEWSKA – independent artist, Butoh dancer, performer, icon painter. A Japanese studies graduate. Since 2008 she has studied Butoh with Yoshito Ohno, Atsushi Takenouchi, Yukio Waguri, Ko Murobushi, Tetsuro Fukuhara, Ken Mai, Maya Dunsky, among others. She danced with Tetsuro Fukuhara during the Days of Japan in Warsaw and Joan Laage in the “Earth Tomes” project in Fort Mokotów. She took part in the Terytoria festivals in CSW Toruń with the first part of the performance “Point zero” and Butohpolis dancing “Niesen” to the music of Ruff Libner and in group and individual improvisations, including “For water”, “Butoh garden” or “Wall”. Together with Joanna Sarnecka, she participates in the artistic and research project “Weselekekkonshiki” presented at Matsuri (2018) and in Butohsfera and the Association of Polish Architects (2019). She reperformed selected works by Marina Abramović during the exhibition “Do czyste/the Cleaner” at CSW Toruń. Her third part of the triptych “Point Zero” – the performance “Point Zero.
