“Spil / Play” – sculpture for Centrum Kultury Podgórza – Fort Borek
Funding value: 86 000,00 zł
Total investment cost: 97 760,00 zł
Brief description of the project:
The project includes the purchase and wide distribution of a contemporary sculpture entitled “Spil / Play” by Mirosław Baca, created in 2021, and its permanent display at the entrance of the Podgórze Culture Center located in the historic Fort Borek, which is part of the former Fortress Kraków. The artwork formally referring to the activities of the city’s cultural institution (concert hall, music classes) is an announcement of close cooperation and integrity with subsequent artistic institutions created in the city’s forts as part of the concept of protection, dissemination and making the forts of the former Fortress Kraków available by giving them new cultural functions.
The objectives of the project is to popularize sculpture as an important aesthetic component of public space and to popularize music by presenting its visual aspect, building a three-dimensional space of music in a sculptural format. The sculpture “Spil / Play” by Mirosław Baca located in the Podgórze Culture Center in Fort Borek will become a link integrating Fort Borek – Fort Kosocice, a common link for both forts dedicated to culture and artists.
Date of the contract: 04.06.2024
A sculptural composition consisting of three integral elements created during the artist’s residency at Hollufgård Skulpturpark in Denmark in 2021 is part of a series of works inspired by classical music. Calmness, precision, tension, rhythm, balance are key concepts for the presented sculptural composition. It is a visual and spatial demonstration of the emotions and experiences of creators, performers, and above all, recipients of music. It does not refer to specific music works but to the structure, formal aspects and emotional substrate of music itself. Thanks to the correlation of size, tension of form, combination of natural materials, balance of weight, play of ornament and introduction of openwork elements, the presented sculptures invite participation in a common space. The recipient, being in it, becomes a part of it and an integral element of the artwork. He does not hear but sees, trans-sensual interplay between one’s ear and eye become the chief topic of work. The author wants to be the composer of the space and the sculpture becomes an instrument, a component of it. The arrangement and interdependence of the modules is a kind of score, the way they are arranged is a performance, an interpretation, a PLAY.
